Originally inspired by the colonial style dresses and safari outfits, Banana Republic started out as very promising brand indeed and today it is one of the well known street wear brands popular especially in the US and in Asia. Let’s see what made Banana Republic so popular and also on where to get to find Banana Republic clothes in South Africa.

Brief history: Banana Republic was born as a brand in 1978 founded by two young designers Mel and Patricia Ziegler, who originally wanted to revive the safari themes of the old time movies. Their first store in San Francisco was even authentically made, to look like a jungle, just perfect for a safari tour. Although the brand got slightly further from this safari style you can still get to find it in the Heritage collection of the brand. Banana Republic has become immensely popular in the Eighties after the huge GAP brand purchased and further develop it. Today, Banana Republic is a well known urban wear brand having over 600 stores in all the main cities in the world. The interesting fact is that the brand named itself after a movie titled banana republic.

The brand is especially popular in South East Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong and this is from where the largest business income of the brand arrives. Although owned by GAP, Banana Republic has its respective design team and it is also well known for having its stores in renovated old buildings, to make its setting more unique.

The current style of Banana Republic is a classic street wear without any extreme designs. The love of basic colours is evident and the use of khaki, beige, brown still stayed with the brand over the decades. Thanks to its success in Asia, “Banana Republic” opened its very first overseas store in Tokyo, Japan. The brand’s first store in South Korea opened in 2007. In the past few years the brand opened several stores in the Middle East too and its current largest European showroom is located at London, opened in 2008.

Banana Republic produces clothes and accessories for men, women and kids. Its BR True line comprises of more upscale items. The website of Banana Republic also works as an e-shopping website.
